The Brattleby Volunteer Corps
Brattleby has no estate, so there is nowhere to volunteer on site. What we do have is a growing archive, a small community of members, and two annual gatherings — and we welcome those willing to lend their time to any of them, from wherever they live.
Why Brattleby Asks for Volunteers
The Twelfth Baroness has set out, in plain language, why volunteering matters to a small organisation like the House: a title and an archive do not maintain or grow themselves. Every transcription, translation and hour spent at a banquet or a tea is a genuine contribution the House could not otherwise afford.
Volunteers are not unpaid staff, and they are not decorative. The House asks the same standards of conduct, discretion and care of its volunteers as it asks of its own household. In return, it offers what it genuinely can: recognition, a sense of belonging to a small and dedicated community, and, where relevant, reimbursement of reasonable expenses.
The six roles below are the principal ways to help. Each is arranged individually with the office of Honorary Lord Răzvan Vasile (by marriage), and all take place remotely or at the House's real events in London and Bucharest.
Ways to Help
All roles are remote or tied to a specific event in London or Bucharest. Multiple roles may be combined.
Archive Transcription & Digitisation
Flexible, remote, year-round
Help transcribe and catalogue documents, correspondence and photographs from the Brattleby archive. Ideal for retired historians, palaeography enthusiasts, and students. All work is done remotely, with training in document description and digital handling provided online.
Translation
Flexible, remote
Assist with translation between English and Romanian (or other languages) for correspondence, publications and event materials relating to the House's activities in London and Bucharest.
Research Assistance
Flexible, remote
Support genealogical and heraldic research relating to the Barony of Brattleby, working from public records and the House's own archive under the guidance of the research team.
Social Media & Correspondence Support
Flexible, remote
Help manage the House's social media presence and respond to correspondence from members and the public, maintaining the tone and standards of the House.
Winter Banquet Stewarding (London)
One evening, annually
Welcome guests and assist with the running of the Winter Banquet in London. Full briefing and guidance on the protocol of the evening is provided in advance.
Noble Tea Stewarding (Bucharest)
One afternoon, annually
Assist with hosting and guest welcome at the Noble Tea, held at the Corinthia in Bucharest, working alongside the household on the day.
The Application Process

Letter of Interest
A short note describing your motivation, the role you wish to take on, and your availability. Sent via the contact form.

Conversation
An informal call or video call with the office of Honorary Lord Răzvan Vasile (by marriage). Usually within ten working days.
03
Remote Induction
A short online briefing covering the House's history, expectations of conduct, and the practicalities of your role.
04
Welcome
Issue of the Brattleby lapel pin, addition to the Volunteer Roll, and your first task or engagement.
What the House Offers in Return
Volunteering with Brattleby is not transactional. The recognitions below are modest, but genuine and taken seriously by the household.
Brattleby lapel pin (silver, struck to the House's heraldic specification)
Complimentary invitation to the Winter Banquet or the Noble Tea in the year of active service
Recognition in the published Annual Report and on the Volunteer Roll of Honour
Letter of Service signed by Honorary Lord Răzvan Vasile (by marriage) after twelve months
Subscription to the Brattleby Almanac (digital edition)
Reasonable travel expenses reimbursed for stewarding at London or Bucharest events
The Volunteer Code of Conduct
All members of the Volunteer Corps subscribe to the following commitments. They are short, plain, and absolute.

Discretion: nothing seen or heard in the course of volunteering is repeated outside it.

Punctuality: commitments, once made, are honoured.
- 03
Accuracy: transcriptions, translations and research are carried out with care and checked before submission.

Address: every guest, colleague and member of the household is addressed by their proper title and form.
- 05
Care: records and materials are handled and returned in the condition in which they were received.
- 06
Loyalty: the volunteer represents the House, and the House represents the volunteer in return.
Apply to Volunteer
Volunteering applications are reviewed personally by the office of Honorary Lord Răzvan Vasile (by marriage). Every applicant receives a written response within ten working days. The Volunteer Corps welcomes new members year-round across all roles.
