A Realistic Commitment
The Noble House of Brattleby is a title and a small membership organisation — it holds no estate, no land and no buildings. It would be dishonest to present environmental claims that belong to a country estate, because no such estate exists.
What the House can genuinely commit to is proportionate to what it actually does: organising two principal gatherings a year (the Winter Banquet in London and the Noble Tea in Bucharest), maintaining a digital archive, and publishing educational material. In each of these areas, we aim to make sensible, low-impact choices.
We have not sought, and do not claim, third-party certification or verification of our environmental practice. Where we describe an intention — such as future support for woodland or heritage charities — we say plainly that it depends on the registration and resourcing of our charitable foundation, which is not yet complete.
Our Approach
Six modest, practical commitments that reflect what the House actually does.
Carbon-Conscious Events
The Winter Banquet in London and the Noble Tea in Bucharest are planned with emissions in mind: venues chosen for their central, transit-accessible locations, catering sourced as locally as practicable, and printed materials kept to a minimum.
Digital-First Archive
The House maintains its records, correspondence and publications in digital form wherever possible, reducing paper use and enabling the material to be shared and preserved without physical printing or storage.
Future Support for Woodland and Habitat Causes
Once the charitable foundation is registered, the House intends to direct a portion of its resources towards established woodland and habitat conservation charities in the United Kingdom, rather than attempting to run such work itself.
Responsible Supplier Choices
Where the House commissions goods or services — printing, regalia, catering, event production — preference is given to suppliers who can demonstrate responsible environmental practice, within the modest scale of the House's operations.
Considered Use of Materials
Publications, banners and event materials are designed for reuse across multiple occasions rather than produced afresh each time, and digital alternatives are used in place of print wherever the audience allows.
Honest Reporting
The House does not claim measured environmental outcomes it has not achieved. Any future claims about emissions, energy or biodiversity will be published only once there is a genuine, verifiable basis for them.
Our Stated Intentions
These are intentions, not measured achievements. We will update this page as they are realised.
The House began keeping its records, newsletters and correspondence digitally by default, reducing reliance on print.
A Provenance-minded approach to catering was adopted for the Winter Banquet and the Noble Tea, favouring seasonal and locally available produce where possible.
Formation of a charitable foundation is under way; once registered, it will consider partnerships with established woodland and heritage charities.
The House intends to review the environmental footprint of its London and Bucharest gatherings and look for further reductions in travel and material waste.
Should the charitable foundation be registered and resourced, the House intends to make its first contributions to recognised conservation causes.
In Practice
Event Planning
For the Winter Banquet and the Noble Tea, we choose venues with good public transport access, keep printed materials to a minimum, and favour caterers who can source food seasonally and locally.
Digital Archive
Our genealogical and heraldic research, publications and correspondence are held and shared digitally wherever possible, rather than printed and distributed physically.
Suppliers
When commissioning printing, regalia or event services, we take a supplier's environmental practice into account alongside cost and quality — without claiming any formal certification of our own.
Future Charitable Support
A charitable foundation is currently in formation and is not yet registered. Once established and resourced, it is our intention to support recognised woodland and heritage conservation charities rather than to run such programmes ourselves.
Support Our Work
The House's activities are funded through membership, event proceeds, and philanthropic support. Once our charitable foundation is registered, donations will be directed there.
