Ancestor Voice Letters

What they are: contemporary creative writing in a historical voice, produced for cultural-educational purposes by the present House of Brattleby. They draw on published social history, peerage records, and the general feel of letters and journals of the relevant period.

What they are not: they are not original historical documents, not transcriptions of any specific manuscript, not part of any government archive, and not artefacts of any kind. They make no claim to authentic provenance. They are not for sale, not for citation as primary sources, and should not be reproduced as if they were.

The dry list of dates that fills most family histories cannot communicate what life felt like. A first-person voice — even a clearly-acknowledged modern reconstruction — can. Many museums, schools and historical societies use exactly this technique: a guide in period costume, a "Letter from the Trenches" workshop, a podcast that imagines what a Roman soldier wrote home. The Brattleby Letters belong to that same tradition of living history.

If reading one of them prompts you to look up the period it evokes, to read a real medieval charter, or to write something of your own, the project will have done its work.
