In 2019, after 620 years of dormancy within the Crown, the Feudal Barony Title of Brattleby was identified through meticulous historical and legal research. Unlike peerages, feudal baronies created before the reign of Edward I exist as hereditary rights that can be conveyed. The research traced the unbroken chain of ownership from Colswein's original grant in 1066, through the de la Hayes, the Longespees, the Lacys, the House of Lancaster, and into the Crown — establishing that the hereditary rights derived from this ancient title could be legally conveyed to new holders. It was a discovery that connected the modern world to the age of the Norman Conquest.
The Conveyance — 5 September 2022
On 5 September 2022, the exclusive hereditary rights derived from the Feudal Barony Title of Brattleby, Lincolnshire were formally conveyed to Lady Nicoleta Scarlat (Vasile) and Mihai-Alexandru Crăciun of London. The conveyance was published in The London Gazette (Notice ID: 4158083) on 9 September 2022. The Gazette notice explicitly stated that 'the right to the title has been created by legal process, not through a re-grant or re-establishment by the Crown.' Lady Nicoleta became the 12th Baroness of Brattleby — the first person to hold the title since Henry of Bolingbroke became King Henry IV in 1399.
